Director of the Volcanology Agency Surono says the eruption early Friday covered some areas with ash but did not pose any threat to nearby villages.
He says no evacuation order was issued but that volcanologists are continuing to carefully monitor the 12,060-foot (3,676-meter) mountain in Central Java. Surono uses only one name.
Indonesia is spread across 17,500 islands and is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes because of its location along the Pacific's so-called "Ring of Fire."
